Zipper Down Pouch - how to crochet a pouch from the zipper down.

Hate sewing on zippers? Me too. So much that I decided to post this tutorial in English too. Click here for the Finnish version.

Note: This is not an exact pattern, but a how to tutorial. You can pretty much use any yarn, but I prefer a not-too-thick cotton yarn. Something you can work with a 2,5mm to 3,5mm hook.
Also, this is my first tutorial in english, so be kind.

I used:
2,5mm crochet hook
10cm zipper (about 4 inches)
A sewing needle

1. Take a long strand of the yarn you'll be working with and stitch around the zipper. The more even the better. The stitches should also be around the same size as the sc's that you're going to crochet on them. Also try to make about the same amount of stitches on the both sides of the zipper. Don't stress it, this is not an exact science.

2. Make one sc in all of the stitches. Except the ones on the ends of the zipper, for those I usually make 3 sc's.

3. For the next two or three rounds increase 4 sc per round in the end corners of the zipper by making 2 sc's in one. You'll have to do some annoying counting of the stitches if you're planning on making a pattern like I did, but not to worry: just add the amount you need. Don't stress it. Then just sc after sc after sc until the pouch is near the desired length.

 4. When your pouch is getting to the desired length decrease 4 sc's per round in the last two to three rounds. Do the decreases in the same places on the corners as you did the increases at the beginning. This creates a nice little roundness. You can also skip this part, and just go straight to the next step.

5. Turn your pouch inside out and sc the bottom shut. You can of course sew it shut too if you prefer.

Some pouches i've made from the zipper down
6. Weave in ends and enjoy. I also recommend posting your pouch on social media. If you use instagram please tag me @mie.ite.blogi and/or use hashtags #mieiteblogi #zipperdownpouch, I would really much like to see how yours turn out.

  2. Hey there, I found your english translation to be just fine. Easy to understand and what a great idea to avoid sewing in that pesky zipper. Thanks!

    1. Thanks, that's nice to hear!
I speak English just fine, I just haven't really written anything more than a few sentences in a long time, so I'm a little self conscious.
